Acura has done it again. It has introduced a new model to its beloved Acura lineup and blown away the competition. That new model is the Acura TLX. The public is so enamored with the TLX, Acura sales rose 21.2% in North America. Previously, Acura sedans experienced a minor lull in sales. With the creation of the TLX, Acura engineers pumped new life into their sedan lineup. The company has sold 60,000 TLXs in the 15 months since it has been available on the North American market. That’s a significant accomplishment for Acura.

The TLX has been called a giant killer. While it hasn’t officially slain any giants, it has outsold the Mercedes-Benz C-Series, the BMW 5-Series, and the Audi 4. Plus, the TLX has also outsold its brethren the Acura TL and TSX by a margin of 3 to 1. That’s because the TLX provides easier connectivity for personal devices and exceptional comfort. It’s a game-changer, so this bodes well for the future of this new Acura sedan in the face of government calls for improved automotive safety and consumer demand for better performing vehicles. Three Electric Motors Power Innovative Sports Car

Coming to Chapman Acura next spring, the all-new Acura NSX supercar is on the cutting edge of electric vehicle performance. Dubbed as the “Best of What’s New” by “Popular Science” magazine, the vehicle has three separate electric motors to control acceleration, braking and cornering. “With its three-motor sport hybrid powertrain, the NSX is propelling Acura performance in an amazing new direction and we can’t wait to share the results with our customers,” according to Jon Ikeda, Acura vice-president. The vehicle made its debut at the recent Los Angeles Auto Show, close to the Acura design studio in Torrance, which was responsible for the vehicle’s radical aerodynamic look.

Popular Science Rewards Innovation in 12 Categories

Although the new Acura NSX won in the automotive category this year, Popular Science has been awarding innovation in 12 different categories for the past 28 years. Other classifications eligible for the award include aviation, engineering, gadgets, computing, green, entertainment, security, home, software, recreation and health. All the winners are featured in the December 2015 edition of the magazine. “The Best of What’s New awards honor the innovations that surprise and amaze us – those that challenge our view of what’s possible,” said Popular Science editor Cliff Ransom.

With two electric engines situated on the front axle for handling and braking, and the third sitting between the twin-turbo V6 and the transmission, the new NSX is primed and loaded to deliver a driving experience that keeps the driver in precise control at all times whether you’re in the mood for a screaming run through some mountain passes or a quiet run creeping along in a school zone. Get Ready to Pick Your Color This Spring

Acura Sedan

For almost 30 years, Acura has been one of the best, most-desired luxury brands. It is the company upstart brands like Kia and Hyundai have sought to emulate. But even as Acura remains in the top five of luxury automobiles sold, the company plans to make some subtle changes to increase sales of their luxury sedans. Acura has sold 148,098 vehicles through the end of October. But sales of the RLX have lagged behind last year’s numbers. In 2014, the company sold 3,413 RLXs. This year sales of the luxury model have declined 35 percent. Still, Acura doesn’t plant to make any radical changes.

Consumers have long loved the lineup of Acura automobiles, and sales continue to be strong overall. But in 2015, Acura’s MDX and RDX crossover models and the TLX, its midsized sedan, have been the most popular vehicles. Acura is keenly aware of the dip in sales of its flagship RLX luxury sedan, but it’s also aware its customer base still loves the quality and features of the brand across the board. So instead of proposing radical changes, their plan is just to make some minor tweaks they hope will buoy sales of the RLX. The company does not want to mess with its very successful formula. Acura’s leadership has been candid in its acknowledgement of the slip in sales of the RLX, but the strong sales of its other models keeps them optimistic. Their challenge is to make the necessary changes to the RLX without losing the elements that have long made its full-size sedan a strong competitor of the BMW 7 series and the S Class Mercedes Benz when it comes to technology and prestige. Instead, the company will leverage the strength it has developed with its front-wheel drive and all-wheel-drive vehicle platforms and borrow a little of the technology from its NSX hybrid supercar. While other brands are touting their new rear wheel drive vehicles with 8-cylinder engines, the 2016 RLX will have sensible upgrades designed to draw new buyers for its luxury sedan while continuing to please its longtime fans. The key is for the RLX to continue to evolve and not attempt to do anything revolutionary and lose its loyal customers. It requires a delicate balance of change and stability, but the company is confident it can do it. It will lean on its ability to increase its cachet while putting its luxury sedan in a position to increase its market share.

Acura acknowledges the luxury sedan doesn’t sell a lot of cars, but it plays an important role in defining the brand’s identity. For now its strategy is to lean on the success of its MDX, RDX, and TLX and work to make incremental improvements in its RLX to increase its sales. The first hint of the RLX’s future could come at the Detroit auto show in January.
