Acura utilized Sunday’s AFC Championship game as a launchpad for its refreshed ILX sedan’s marketing campaign.

Acura may be on the sidelines for the Super Bowl commercials this year, but the brand wasn’t going to let the high-profile NFL playoffs slip by without making a splash.

The first commercial for the entry-luxury ILX, “Bottle,” aired during the New England Patriots’ 45-7 blowout over the Indianapolis Colts. Acura said the commercial was part of the ILX’s larger “Catch it if You Can” campaign that will continue in the coming months.

The 2016 ILX costs $27,970 plus shipping, arrives at dealerships like Chapman Acura, in February. ILX sales decreased 13 percent to 17,854 vehicles last year and the model has shown signs of serious struggle at certain intervals since its initial launch. Acura sales increased 1.5 percent in an overall U.S. market that was up 6 percent.

“American Honda (includes Honda and Acura) has a multi-year agreement that allows us to have a larger advertising presence during the AFC game. So it makes sense to take advantage of that agreement with the launch of ILX rather than a Super Bowl ad for this launch,” Acura spokeswoman Jessica Fini wrote in an email on Saturday.

”This first ILX spot is a bit more brand focused and the subsequent ads will show more product/benefit attributes.”

Last year’s AFC title game attracted an audience of 51.3 million viewers, according to Nielsen. By comparison, Super Bowl XLVIII attracted 111.5 million viewers.

The ILX spot “depicts an Acura engineer trekking into the wild during a driving rain storm to capture lightning in a Leyden Jar, a container that scientists used in the 1700’s to store electricity,” Acura said in a statement. “Having successfully captured a lightning bolt, the Acura engineer returns to his design laboratory to infuse the energy into the new 2016 ILX.”

Reset Productions director Johnny Green, who directed the 2014 Under Armour spot starring ballet dancer Misty Copeland that received more than 7 million views on YouTube was the brainchild behind the ILX commercial along with Acura’s creative agency Mullen.

The Acura ILX push will execute plans to leverage the digital space with “major online homepage takeovers” and messaging extension on social media.

“We are planning a Twitter card activation again — which was very successful with the TLX launch,” Fini wrote.

According to Twitter, the cards give brands a chance to “attach media experiences to tweets” that link to their content. With the TLX launch last summer, Acura deployed cards that let people configure their own versions of the sedan within a tweet.

Although the 2016 Acura MDX keeps its 3.5-liter V6 engine, the 290 horsepower engine is now direct injected and outputs 267 lb-ft of torque. A new fuel economy feature—idle stop, shuts off the engine under given conditions.

Rear view cameras are now standard on all 2016 MDXs and they offer 3 views: top-down, regular and wide. The wide views helps to identify oncoming vehicles when reversing out of parking spots. Whereas the top-down view is ideal for parallel parking or lining up a trailer hitch.

A new 9 speed automatic transmission replaces the previous 6-speed transmission on the 2016 Acura MDX. Gone are the regular shifters and in their place are push-button selectors. There are also paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel. The touch screen instrument panel in the MDX can effortlessly switch between audio and climate displays.

Even though the 2016 MDX is almost identical to the 2015 model, there are some important differences.

The 9-speed transmission is 66 lbs lighter and shifts 25% faster. The shift by wire transmission makes the traditional gearshift obsolete. Replacing it are 2 selection switches—one for park, neutral and drive, and the other switch for reverse.

With the move to 9 speed transmission, there wasn’t the expected improvement in fuel efficiency. The 2016 model for FWD and AWD are 27 & 26 for highway driving respectively. This proves to be only a one mpg improvement over the 2015 model. City driving has an estimated 19 mpg.

For the 2016 MDX buyers who are fans of the AWD, will get to take advantage of the Super Handling All-Wheel-Drive (SH-AWD). A 25% lighter rear twin-clutch differential distributes torque to not only the front and rear, but to the right and left wheels to improve stability and cornering.

The base price for the 2016 MDX is $42,865, but that can go up to $58,000 when adding SH-AWD and packages. In terms of safety, Chapman Acura is proud to report that the MDX has a 5 star rating from NHTSA. The 2015 model also received the Top Safety Pick Plus from the IIHS. The 2016 model is expected to receive a similar rating.

You will be able to start your MDX from the comfort of your home and have it heated or cooled to the temperature you want. Once in your perfectly heated MDX, you can enjoy the 10 or 12 speaker Acura high-end audio system.

The paradigm-shifting Acura NSX supercar was introduced 25 years ago. Now Acura has revealed at the 2015 North American International Auto Show, its highly anticipated successor that will be developed and produced in the U.S. The all-new NSX will highlight the design, production, styling, and specifications of the mid-engine hybrid sports supercar from Acura. Acura also revealed specifics of the next generation vehicle’s performance and design.

The new NSX is a result of almost 3 years of intense development by a worldwide engineering and design team. The production was spearheaded by Acura’s development center in Raymond, Ohio.

An all-new power unit generates the power of the Acura supercar. It consists of a twin-turbocharged, longitudinally mounted 75-degree DOHC V6 engine that has a 3-electric motor Sport Hybrid system, along with a 9-speed dual clutch transmission (DCT). Acura engineers were able to bring together the company’s technological expertise in hybrid electric-drive and high performance engines and dynamic torque vectoring. As an industry leader, Acura also has the most intelligent powertrains on the market, including the Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD).

Mounted between the transmission and engine, the direct-drive rear electric motor provides braking, acceleration and the performance of transmission shifting. From the front of the Acura NSX, independent electric high-output motors power the wheels. These twin motors deliver immediate torque response and dynamic torque distribution from left to right.

In addition to dynamic torque vectoring, the NSX uses the front electric motors for improving acceleration and braking performance. This gives the driver an immediate “zero delay” launch performance and handling response that almost predicts the needs of the driver.

The NSX shape incorporates a time-honoured low and wide ratio, partnered with contemporary and captivating surfacing. The NSX’s complete look is an aggressive front style and tail lighting that pays tribute to the original NSX model. The unique side intake and hanging C-pillar gathers airflow to supply the mid-mounted power plant, and regulates airflow over the back deck to improve downforce. The Acura’s state-of-the-art wind tunnel has led to numerous changes from the concept, to the final design of the body. Some of these changes include improved hood vents, front fender vents, revised side airflow intakes, and fully optimized deck spoilers.

The sensual curves together with practical features of the NSX, combine an ultra-rigid and feather light multi-material body; resulting in world’s-first material functions and production procedures.

The interior features simple, user-friendly controls with top of the class ergonomics. The seats provide first-rate holding performance and outstanding comfort.
